I am still working on getting link-able entries within this page, but for now the most recent spoilers will be listed first.
Spoiler: The Wedding Gift:
There, I said it, dont get mad if you read on and I spoil the ending!!!
My first issue with the ending was that the timing made me so sad. This is perhaps not something I should fault the author for, because lets be honest, life doesnt always have good timing. Sarah escapes and almost the next day Mr Allen dies and his will decrees Emmeline(Sarah's mother) and her family be freed from slavery AND moved to a free state with some money. It makes you want to cry knowing that, had Sarah waited just a few more days, she would have been free.
My only other issue with the ending, is that while I understand that some books like to leave you with a jaw dropped, this one tried for the jaw dropper but just felt hasty. Once Sarah has escaped and now has a new home in a new country, she admits to the reader that she poisoned Mr Allen so that he would die (which partially makes me wonder why she ran if she knew he'd be dead soon and she would be freed). She also admits that, in addition to killing her master/father, she returned her first husband to slavery. To backtrack, she writes her husband "traveling passes" which he cannot read, which in the last page she admits she wrote "Return to Allen plantation for $200 reward" so that he would be caught and returned so that she could safely escape. This is something the reader could've inferred on their own, which makes me feel that the last page was just shock for shocks sake.
